Just announced, the new BR-X2 Skeleton Tourbillon Micro-Rotor is the evolution of the BR-X2 Tourbillon introduced last year. Developed in partnership with MHC Manufacture Haute Complication, a Geneva-based movement-designer, the manufacture calibre BR-CAL.381 measures just 4.05mm thick. The new Bell & Ross BR-01 Laughing Skull is still based on the same basic principles as the rest of the collection: the BR-01 case, meaning a 46mm x 46mm square case, the equally skull-shaped dial with crossing bones circling the 4 screws of the case, the minute track engraved around the skull face and a highly decorated case. For this edition, Bell & Ross chose to use micro-blasted steel, giving the watch a matte finishing, and to adorn this case with a deeply engraved “Clous de Paris” pattern - a motif usually used on traditional guilloché dial but here reshaped to be much more modern.

Yet, these subtle differences are giving this collection the cool factor it was missing. For this article, we chose to go for the 3-hander model with a rotating bezel, the Vintage BR V2-92 Steel Heritage. Why this one and not the chronograph? For a simple reason: it is the most balanced and most pleasant of them all.
A watch brand simply cannot rely on one single watch/collection, at least when it has the ambition to sell more than just a few thousand pieces a year. If having a true identity shared by all models is a necessity, a single concept/design is dangerous - think Panerai, for instance. Diversity coupled with consistency is key. Knowing that the BR-01 and BR-03 watches - what B&R calls the “instrument collection” - were both success factors and possible threats, the Parisian-based brand had to evolve, to bring something fresh, different, yet consistent with the DNA created over the years. Easy to say, harder to achieve. This was the mission of the Vintage collection. Yet, moving from such a strong design - the “circle-within-a-square” watch - to something more traditional, without losing the very idea behind the brand, required a few steps.
